Substitute Nurse

Summary: The Substitute Nurse provides preventive health services to facilitate the student’s optimal physical, mental, emotional and social growth and development. Identifies problems and disabilities and provides such services as case finding, health education, referring and care in order to help prevent serious health problems. Supports the education process by working to assure the health of the students.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Report to the office upon arrival, check out at the end of the day
  • Administer prescriptive medications according to physician’s orders
  • Makes referrals to other health care professionals, as required
  • Maintains a medical service record keeping system which complies with all applicable regulations
  • Provides direct nursing care to students based upon the nursing care plan or in response to an emergency situation
  • Serves as a resource person to school personnel in health education matters
  • Promotes and protects the optimal health status of school age children
  • Be aware of the different social personalities
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Office and other computer programs
  • Assist administrators in implementing the policies and procedures of the school to maintain a safe learning environment for the students
  • Maintain student confidentiality
  • Be aware of any school policy and procedures regarding lock downs, fire drills, etc.
  • Represent the District and PESG in a professional manner by performing all job functions at a satisfactory or above level.
  • Interact with co-workers, administration, students, parents, and the community in a positive, supportive, and cooperative ways.
  • Performs other related duties, including special projects, as required or requested, consistent with reasonable expectations for the contracted position.

Qualifications:

  • B.S.N or Registered Nurse with a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in public health nursing, community health in public health nursing, school health nursing or pediatric nursing
  • Knowledge of principles and practices underlying professional nursing
  • Knowledge of principles and practices underlying the special field of school health
  • Knowledge of current trends in nursing and of literature in the fields of school health
  • Knowledge of organization and administration of other cooperating agencies
  • Knowledge of state and local laws relating to health and social issues
  • Completion of the required Global Compliance Network training modules
  • Demonstrated record of good attendance and punctuality.
  • Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication.
  • Must meet criminal history background requirements (requires FBI Fingerprint and SOARS clearance)

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time
  • Occasional climbing of steps
  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels
